Value Investing Seminar! May 15, 2015
Hi NYPIC Members!
This Friday, there will be a Value Investing Seminar by Mr Sky Kwah Wen Yao, who is an equity dealer at Phillip Securities. It will be held at LTD 5 from 2 - 3.30 pm. The following synopsis will provide you with more information regarding the seminar :)
The old proverb, “not to put all one’s eggs in one basket”, may be a common expression among many investors, but it should not be so for Value Investors. Value investing is not about investing in eggs – companies that crack under stress. Rather, it is about investing in rubber balls – companies that bounce back regardless of the situation. The concept of “buying low, selling high” is a prevailing notion in day to day business, and it also holds true in the stock market.
This seminar offers an understanding of the health of a company’s business operations and seeks to determine its valuation without using complex academic technicalities. The intermediate level aims to reinforce basic good habits of fundamental analysis, and to provide a strategy process for picking undervalued companies quickly and accurately.
Specifically, we will discuss the following:

Bloomberg Philatrophist 2016
|
The Bloomberg Philanthropies program provided not only students from NYPIC but other clubs as well together to learn soft skills, Journalism and useful Bloomberg Terminal functions.
Held on the 23rd of June 2016, the students made their way from NYP to Bloomberg`s regional office in Singapore at Capital Square. Students were greeted warmly by the staff there as well as the well stocked pantry. Even surprising were the open style office concept and some employees having multiple screens on their table. The program started with an introduction on what Bloomberg does as an information provider followed by a financial data & Journalism session and before lunch, a workshop on leadership & Communications skills. Post Lunch saw the participants going through a real World View of Global Financial Markets before moving to a room full of Bloomberg terminals to start on their project: "what it takes for Singapore to be a Smart Financial Centre". The project saw the group of year three students being awarded the best presenters and will be going through a work shadowing for two weeks at Bloomberg. |
National Cashflow Competition 2016After participating in this National Cash flow competition, it widens our knowledge and our perspective on saving and spending. It is my first time participating in this type of competition where we are taught to play a board game. At first, I thought it is going be to very easy to play as it looks quite similar to the game monopoly which is my childhood game. However, I was wrong as it includes many other elements such as investing in bonds and financial statement. I managed to pull through the first round and went to the finals but did not managed to win anything but the buffet and goodie bag. In my opinion, this board game is created to educate players to save and spend carefully and also emphasize on the importance of planning for their future. This board game includes Singapore context such as CPF tokens and HDB flats which players would find it more realistic. Everyone should participate in this competition to have a better understanding in the “real” world and hone our skills in wealth management and investing in risk-free environment. In conclusion, the returns of this competition is fruitful!

NTU's FINEX 2012
FINEX, or Financial Expedition, is a team-based expedition challenge for students to learn about financial literacy in an engaging and exciting way. This year’s FINEX 2012 will unveil a new set of games and activities that will serve to make the event more meaningful and interactive.
Participants will join the event in groups of 3, and will, as a group, compete with other groups in a race filled with activities and challenges.
FINEX was held on 16th June 2012, Saturday. The event took place in the main areas of the Central Business District (CBD), from Promenade and Esplanade to beyond Raffles Place. While endurance and stamina may be required in this race, quick thinking and financial literacy are more crucial in winning the race. The objective of the race is to accumulate the highest amount of “wealth”, which can be earned through game stations distributed across the CBD. Some game stations that participants will be visiting are “The Price Is Right“, “Wheel of Fortune” and “Hard Work“.
While groups participate in the Station Games, they may engage themselves in secondary activities provided by the “Marketplace“. The Marketplace will be located at a central area and will be accessible to the groups throughout the entire duration of FINEX. At the Marketplace, the group can spend their “money” on items which may help them earn more “money”, or keep their “money” safe.
